About Us

Rock Hill Baptist Church has a fascinating history. The church started out as a frame house dedicated to the worship of God on November 22, 1835. It is located 1388 feet above sea level in the beauty and quietude of Old Rock Hill.

The present structure was built in 1850 of mostly native lumber.  The steeple was constructed in 1905. The huge bell in the steeple can be heard for many miles over the hills and valleys of Belmont County. It took a team of horses and rope pulleys to move the 800 pound bell into position.

Some of the early Pastors were Rev. L. L. Sedwick, Rev. R. H. Sedwick, Rev. Wm. Stores, Rev. S. C. Bush, Rev. Tom Jones, Rev. P. McCollins, Rev. W. J. Dunn, Rev. M. Squibbs, Rev. T. M. Erwin, Rev. G. C. Sedwick, Rev. M. Barnes, Rev. S. Siegfried, and Rev. G. C. Boyd (in 1880, known for his long black beard he wore down to his waist).

Before the current pastor was hired Rock Hill Baptist Church was lovingly and passionately taught by Rev. Robert Merritt for some 50 years.  Preceding him was Rev. Mr. Fellinger and the Rev. Mr. Murphy.

(Information for this was obtained from an August 5, 1960 article printed in the Freeport Press)
